Oral pathology is the speciality of dentistry and sub-discipline of pathology that is concerned with the nature, identification and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. The practice of oral pathology includes the diagnosis of diseases using clinical, radiographic, microscopic, biochemical or other diagnostic information, professional and interactive contribution to the management of patients, research and a responsibility for the dissemination of professional knowledge to other in the health professions and to the public.

The objective of the Microalgal Biotechnology Group is to further the understanding of the ecology of microalgae. This will assist with the development of commercial-scale microalgal culturing techniques for the production of bioactive compounds, aquaculture feed, fine chemicals, and renewable fuels. Additionally, environmental applications such as CO2 bioremediation, control of excessive algal growth and development of management strategies for water supply managers are investigated. The Microalgal Biotechnology Group is a part of a national research group (BEAM), which focuses on photosynthetic light utilisation efficiency and carbon fixation, chlorophyll fluorescence, biochemistry of secondary metabolites, molecular biology and photo-bioreactor design and engineering.

The Mining and Geotechnical Engineering Research Group brings together capabilities in geostatistics, operations research, rock mechanics, and geotechnical engineering. We bring these capabilities together with a focus on improving the efficiency of mining operations, both below and above ground.

The Master of Software Engineering aims to provide graduates with the knowledge, tools and methods for defining software requirements, performing software design, construction, testing and maintenance tasks. Graduates gain a demonstrated ability to design and construct large software systems and are qualified to secure rewarding technical careers in the software engineering industry. Students who wish to proceed to further research study must complete an individual year-long research project in an area of software engineering instead of the usual year-long group project. Interested students should consult the program coordinator in their first year of study. Students may convert to a Master of Software Engineering from a Master of Computing and Innovation after completing the equivalent of a major in computer science. Students seeking to convert between degrees are required to seek program advice from the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences, as not all courses can be counted towards the new degree.

The Master of Surgical Science is designed to provide a professional qualification for those wanting to enhance their research and scientific skills and who are embarking on a career in surgery. In particular, the aim of the program is to offer surgical education and training (SET) trainees and pre-vocational doctors the opportunity to: obtain and extend their professional skills in the academic side of surgery, with an emphasis on research; develop the skills of writing and presenting at meetings; attract funding; and promote scholarly activity. Students will gain a sound basis in understanding the process of project design, grant getting, ethics application and statistics, all delivered by experienced research supervisors. The research content and supervision of the program will especially appeal to those who wish to further develop their skills in research, presentations and publications, particularly to comply with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’ SET research requirements. The Master of Surgical Science is accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

A blended approach including involvement from industry experts underpins the program which provides a wine business and market development education. It is customised to the needs of the domestic and global wine trade with a unique emphasis of the wine production and sales industry. Students learn to combine cutting-edge and world best-practice wine marketing know-how with a working knowledge and skills in both winemaking and viticulture, thus incorporating the entire wine value chain. This is what wine industries worldwide expect wine business professionals to know and understand. Graduates will attain professional skills that enable them to devise and implement wine business and global market development principles, theories and strategies in the domestic and international wine industry. This program is offered in Trimester mode, there are three trimesters in each academic year commencing in January, May and September. The Master of Wine Business is an AQF Level 9 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 2 years.

The Australian School of Petroleum is Australia’s distinguished centre of excellence for petroleum geoscience and engineering research, education and training. The school has strong links with industry in relation to both research and teaching. The Master of Science (Petroleum Geoscience) is comprised of a comprehensive coursework program and research training. The Master of Science in Addiction Studies (International Programme in Addiction Studies) is a unique degree that provides the expert knowledge and skills required to make a difference in the field of addiction. It is well suited to professionals and recent graduates from a range of fields such as health, counselling, law enforcement, social work, science and policy, who wish to take their careers to the next level. The degree is delivered entirely online by three of the world’s leading universities in addiction sciences: the University of Adelaide; Virginia Commonwealth University; and the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London. It will enable candidates possessing undergraduate degrees in non-accounting disciplines to move into careers in accounting, financial management, auditing and business advisory services in public practice, industry or government.
